This Is Why Teams Chasing Targets Usually Win !

If you’ve watched the Vivo IPL 2018 so far you would have seen that till now the team batting 2nd second has usually won the game. Why is this so? Is it just a pure coincidence? Or is there a reason behind it ? This is not just happening in just these t20 leagues but almost in every international match played. If you wanna know why this happens, then you are at the right place.

Let’s come to the basics first, as you know every game starts with a toss, and this toss is very crucial for any team’s success, because it gives them an early advantage , which if they seize on , then they become victorious. There are many factors deciding the reason behind teams usually preferring to bat 2nd and here are few of them.

1. Pitch :

This is 1 of the key factors in deciding the progress of the game, pitches are completely different across different venues and based on this teams decide when to bat.Generally in the mornings or in the start of the match, the pitch is more suitable for bowlers as it gives them just the right amount of swing making it tough for the batsmen, but as the day progresses, the pitch gradually becomes ineffective favoring the team batting 2nd. Hence, they usually get an idea how the pitch behaves and how they can adjust to it accordingly. However, not everything is constant as there are few exceptions to this, that is, as bowlers bowl on these hard pitches , they start to develop cracks and if the ball falls on these cracks , then even you don’t know which way the ball will turn and there is always a chance of the ball kissing the edge of the bat giving more chances for the fielding team.

Like this pitch is an important factor in deciding whether who bats first, it does vary a lot and depends on the teams perspective, if the pitch develops cracks early on then its better to have a bowl first and assess the pitch before you come to bat.

2. Dew Factor :

This is a general factor teams usually keep in their mind , though it may look small , it is capable of turning the game around on its own! Except for the pitch, almost the whole part of the ground is covered with grass, and during the course of the game, you could see small droplets of water on the grass, and this is dew , in simple terms , caused due to condensation of water. This isn’t something to take lightly as , once the dew starts playing its role then this is what happens.

The ball tends to slip from your hands and this leads to miss-fields costing a lot, you cannot easily grip the ball, thus this may eventually lead to a difficulty while catching, players tend to slip and fall down getting injured while chasing the ball towards the boundary, and injuries are not at all welcome by any team . Even while bowling , especially for the spinners, gripping the ball to make it turn becomes tough and they tend to give more extras or full tosses on which no batsman will miss out. Overall, dew is something that the staff usually take into consideration during the toss of a match.

3. The Psychological Advantage :

Though the title may not clearly specify my intentions properly , but this is something a team mostly looks into before the start of a game. Now if a team bats on a pitch and gives you a target, you know now the required run rate and at what rate to score. This basically allows a batsman to take just the right amount of risks or no risks at all while batting providing a solid foundation for their team’s win. The team batting second now knows how to assess the game as he has the target in front of him, if the target is big then he knows when he must try to hit hard and when he can just settle with ones or twos.

This basically puts the team batting second out of pressure as they  have almost everything they want in front of them and it is now up to them to hit the winning runs. But again there are exceptions , if suppose the team batting second doesn’t bowl well initially then he has to face a huge target and this can put the batsmen in serious pressure, trying to hit every delivery that comes to them.So like this , the batting first can capitalize on and add pressure , and pressure can make things go absurd. Even the easiest can be made the toughest. So every team basically tries to capitalize on this psychological advantage to win the game.

So these were the main factors as to why teams mostly prefer batting in the later parts of the game.Although there might be exceptions equaling this these are the main factors anybody keeps in mind while playing the gentleman’s game.

This was a completely new topic as compared to the others , if you did find this intersting share it among your friends and family , give it a like and comment down below to encourage me to put much better content in the future !

There’s No Stopping The CSK !

The lions from Chennai roared once more as they went on to win their second game of the VIVO IPL 2018. CSK faced KKR on 10th april 2018, both the teams had one 1 game each and were looking in great touch. CSK eventually won the toss and elected  to bowl first, and then came in the openers Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn who started tormenting the Chennai bowlers from the very first over. It was only until Harbhajan’s over, that KKR lost Sunil Narine for just 12 runs.  On the other end Chris Lynn kept the score board moving but great bowling from Ravindra Jadeja  saw the end of Chris Lynn, but the next two deliveries Robin Uthappa who had come in just after Narine hit two huge maximums that kept CSK pressurized.

Now on the crease was Nitish Rana , who played well, but got out due to a foolish shot on Watson’s bowling. KKR saw another wicket in the same over as a misunderstanding between Robin and Dinesh Kartik, led to the run out of Robin, courtesy, a great throw from Suresh Raina hitting the stumps directly. So basically, Kolkata maintained a run rate of 10 per over but kept losing wickets at regular intervals.  Dinesh Kartik kept on rotating the strike ensuring that they don’t loose wickets. However, the next batsman Rinku Singh fell for just 2 runs and now KKR had already lost half their side.

This paved in the way for Andre Russell , who had a marvelous night as he kept on hitting those huge sixes one of which, saw its way out of the stadium!Whichever overhe faced , there was something special. Things were  going well for KKR until the wicket of their skipper due to great bowling by Shane Watson. It didn’t matter a lot as they had already reached a total of 150, but there was not stopping Russell, as he kept on hitting those monstrous sixes and even the likes of Dwayne Bravo couldn’t do much.

KKR eventually went on to score a magnificient 202 for the loss of 6 wickets all due to the frantic efforts of Andre Russell.

CSK had to chase a mamoth total of 203 in their 20 overs and the openers started thrashing the KKR bowlers from the very first over. Both the batsmen Watson and Rayudu were in great form as they went on to score 75 runs in the powerplay. The KKR skipper had no clue as all his bowlers were getting thrashed. Watson, however fell for 42 runs of just 19 deliveries. Then came in Suresh Raina , who started limping from the very start of his innings , he now couldn’t run much and hence had to hit whatever came his way.He could not connect the shots well and eventually got caught scoring a mere 14 runs.

On the other end , Rayudu looked in great touch as went on to score 39 runs as he got out to a poor shot played  in Kuldeep’s over. Batting now were M.S.Dhoni and Sam Billings. The pair kept on striking the balls cleanly ensuring CSK gets atleast 10 an over. CSK tried as much as possible to keep the asking rate in control as much as possible. M.S.D kept on striking the ball, but he couldn’t do much against the spinners, as they were much impressive and finally Chennai lost their skipper to Piyush Chawla.

A lot of runs were still required and Sam Billings kept on striking the ball with his wide range of shots and eventually got to a quick fire fifty. It was in the 3rd over that he got out to Tom Curran, but by this time the damage was already done and then came in Dwayne Bravo, who just ran around the world world before the match! Last 2 overs left , and to partner Bravo was Jadeja, trying as much as possible to give strike to Bravo. Lastly, it was all down to the last over as CSK needed 15 runs to win. The man bowling the last over was Vinay Kumar who bowled a no-ball in the very first ball which went for a clean six. this allowed them to get 9 runs of the very first delivery as they got 2 runs of it as an extra. CSK needed a boundary of the last 2 and it was Jadeja on strike, a clean length ball and it was gone for a huge six! CSK had won again!

Two heart throbbing matches for CSK as they won this game too of the second last ball of the match. One thing to note till now is that whichever team has chased has eventually gone on to win the match. It was clearly seen that the Chennai crowd after two long years of wait had enjoyed every moment of the match in teir fortress at Chepauk. Once again it was celebration time for the men in yellow !

Kolkata Rides To Victory!

The Knight Riders locked horns with the Royals of Bangalore on the 8th of April in the 11th edition of the Vivo IPL. The match was always interesting with some new faces from both the teams. KKR started their campaign with their new skipper Dinesh Kartik. RCB too was packed with a completely new team, with a deadly top 4 when it comes to their batting.

KKR eventually won the toss and chose to field first. Then came out the Kiwi Brendon McCullum and the Protea Quinton Decock. The Kiwi started thrashing the bowlers from the very first over but RCB soon lost Quinton very early due to a foolish reverse sweep shot. But when you are in India, the crowd cheers for any wicket fallen before the entry of Virat Kohli. However, the runs were scored quite quicky from the other side, courtesy Bazz McCullum. but however the good looking batsman was sent to the pavilion for a good 43 runs due to a magical spell from Sunil Narine. Then came  MR.360,  ABD. The crowd had already gone crazy witnessing the dream pair batting , they stiched a good partnership , but Virat never looked like he was in good touch , but it didn’t matter much  as there was no stopping ABD from the other end.

DE Villiers went on to score 44 runs until there came that magical over from Nitish Rana. The KKR skipper had taken a gamble by giving the batsman an over , but it proved out just disastrous for the men in red as ABD was dismissed for a well played 44 , but that was not it, the very next ball, Nitish foxed Virat and he was out, bowled! The crowd couldn’t believe it. Though he conceded 11 runs of that over , he did his job by dismissing the backbone of the RCB batting order. After that things never went well for RCB as they soon lost Sarfraz and Chris Woakes cheaply. It was the last over that might have changed R CB’s and Mandeep Singh’s fortunes as he scored massive in the last over against Vinay Kumar scoring 37 runs for himself and also helping RCB reach a score of 176 for the loss of 7 wickets.

Then started the Kolkata chase, the openers were Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine, yes it was Sunil Narine! Gotta give credit to Gautam Gambhir for this experiment in the batting as it went on very well for DK too. However, Chris Lynn fell very early to Chris Woakes, but there was no stopping Narine as he playing there with a massive strike rate of 263. After Lynn’s wicket , Robin Uthappa came in playing a supportive role by giving Nrine the strike as much as possible during the powerplay. Narine eventually went on to score a 50 of just 17 balls. But the very next over, Kolkata lost Narine too as he chopped on the ball towards the off stump.

Umesh Yadav was the only RCB bowler who had a good night as he soon sent Robin Uthappa packing due to a great catch by Brendon McCullum. On the pitch now were, Nitish Rana  who had a good campaign with the Mumbai Indians last season and the Kolkata skipper Dinesh Kartik. Rana looked in great form as he kept on scoring from one end while the composed skipper kept the score board ticking.  Rana went on to score 34 runs but soon fell to Washington Sundar . Then came in Rinku Singh , a new face and well, he couldn’t stand there much with Dinesh as he got out to a DRS taken by the Bangalore skipper.

The match was not yet sealed for KKR but Andre Rusell came in and few boundaries just to ensure that Kolkata needed less than a run a ball to win.  Howeve, he too got out due to a bad shot hit high up in the air. But this wicket was just too late as Dinesh Kartik went on to ensure KKR their first victory of the season in a matter of 18.5 overs having 4 wickets in hand.

The man of the match was declared as Sunil Narine due to his fantastic spell and blazing knock of 50 that gave Kolkata the desired start. A lot to focus on, when it comes to Banagalore’s perspective as they need to improve their bowling line up to perform better under Virat’s leadership as even great bowlers like Chahal and Wahington were hammered by the Knight Riders.

But one thing till now has remained constant, whichever team plays with 3 wrist spinners eventually wins.

Mayank Markande – A new find for MI ?

Mayank Markande, never heard of him right? But you should have after his heroics against the CSK in the IPL 2018 opener on April 7th 2018. The young leggie has not yet played an international match but has just made his debut for the Mumbai Indians in the 11th edition of the IPL. He’s not that popular but MI decided to grab him at the auction held recently.

The only platform through which he had been discovered was the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He played 5 matches in that tournament , getting 5 wickets at a not so impressive economy rate of just over 9 per over. This young lad from Punjab, did pack a punch in the match against CSK and managed to impress his coach and the skipper. He managed to  scalp three wickets of M.S.Dhoni, Rahul Chahar and Ambati Rayudu conceding just 23 runs in his quota of 4 overs. To perform like that in the first match of his career and under such a high pressure game is something to applaud for.

After the auction, it was quite clear that MI had their own weaknesses in the spin department after losing the likes of Harbhajan Singh, who has loads of experience. The onus of mentoring the spin department had come on Krunal Pandya’s shoulders who was only a part-time spinner for Mumbai. Though MI had the likes of Akila Dhananjaya and J.P.Duminy as their spinners, yet it was clear that they lacked the experience.

Mayank, had his own aspirations of becoming a fast bowler , however he was not quite effective at bowling fast, hence his coach suggested him to try being a spinner. From then things were different for him, and he worked hard at mastering the art of spin bowling.Ultimately, this hard work of his helped him to grab a place in one of the biggest franchises of the world.

His ability to fox the likes of a legend like Dhoni and that of a successful batsman like Ambati Rayudu is clearly something that should not be taken lightly.  This basically reduces the pressure on Krunal’s shoulders to handle the spin department. During the toss , skipper Rohit Sharma said that they had seen something special in him and hence gave him a chance. Even the coach , Mahela Jayawardene specified that he bowled pretty well in the nets, so they focused a bit more on him. Well, he did prove that he is capable of surprising the opposition.

Last night, he was able to turn the ball pretty well even on a pitch that looked good for the swing bowlers and almost pulled the match away from CSK. But as it’s said, it’s never done until it’s actually done, MI eventually went on to lose the match. But nevertheless of this, it was that kind of a debut anybody would want to have.It was the second best figures for a debutant playing for MI after Lasith Malinga.

Mumbai should have pulled the match easily, but T20 is a funny game. In the midst of the CSK innings, Mayank almost got his 4th wicket i.e of Kedar Jadhav ,who  actually finished of the match for Chennai. It was an LBW appeal, the umpire refused to give it out , and MI hesitated to take a DRS review, while they should have. It was then later seen that the ball had hit the wickets cleanly, so Mumbai clearly missed the opportunity that later cost them. Jadhav was clearly LBW but his luck favored him as  Rohit Sharma was hesitant to review it.

In the end, MI have successfully found a new talent, they should concentrate more on him for this will allow him to perform much better in the future matches and also maybe find himself a place in the Indian team, I know i am talking a lot , but anything is possible. This loss shouldn’t hurt Mumbai much as it was just not their day, else everything was just fine, if the seamers can get their yorkers perfectly then it’s a joy ride for Rohit’s troops.

The DJ Ruins Mumbai’s Party!

The Vivo IPL 2018 kicked off on the 7th of April 2018 , and no one could have asked for a better start. The MI, CSK  rivalry is always something to cherish and enjoy. From the very first ball of the season to the very last ball of the match ,the game was never over. The match was scheduled in the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai, and the hosts were ready with their guns to face the Whistle Podu army , the CSK.

The first coin of the IPL 2018 was flipped and it was Chennai who won the toss and elected to bowl first, the reason being was that this ground was always a ground to chase. The hosts were happy to chase and then began theencounter.

Deepak Chahar was handed the first over by M.S, and Mumbai INDIAN’s skipper , Rohit Sharma started the proceedings with hitting a four in the first over..In the vey next over , the IPL debuton Evin Lewis was sent for a duck by Shane Watson. From there Mumbai lost their skipper cheaply for just 15 runs to Shane Watson. It was just then that India witnessed a fine batting display by two youngsters, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav , both scoring in the 40s and more importantly providing a much needed partnership for Mumbai. However, the partnership got broken as Suryakumar Yadav was sent packing for a score of 43.

From then on , the Pandya brothers took on the onus and as they do, provided MI with a finish of 165 for the loss of 4 wickets. They were 10 runs short , courtesy, superb death bowling from Dwayne Bravo. Hardik Pandya was limping to the dressing room but the soon got over.

The CSK innings then began with Shane Watson and  Ambati Rayudu. For the first few overs, things went good for CSK, until the good looking Watson went cheaply trying to hit high and ended up getting caught by Even Lewis at the boundary. Ambati Rayudu looked in great touch and it felt as if it were no stopping him, until the IPL debuton Markhande dismissed him for 22 runs. Next came in Suresh Raina and could not do much as he was dismissed by Hardik for just 4 runs. Hardik was in pain after that ankle injury while batting but his commitment towards his team saw him scalping 2 wickets for the MI.

Then came in Kedar Jadhav and scored few runs and was retired hurt, then came in the captain cool , who was completely outshone by the young leggie, Mayank  markhande who got him out LBW. It now looked impossible for csk , as another wicket of Deepak Chahar fell due to great bowling by the leg spinner who got 3 wickets in total and proved why he was there. While it looked impossible for the men in yellow, there came in the man of the night , DJ.Bravo, the lone ranger. He kept on striking the ball and there was some hope until he was there . Long story short, the match was breathtaking with about 47 from the last 3 overs. Then came the over that CSK  just wanted, Bravo scalped 20 runs of the Mclenaghen over with powerfull sixes stunning the Mumbai crowd.

The story wasn’t over just yet, there was a twist in the tale, The death specialist Jasprit Bumrah too was hammered for 20 runs , but he had the last laugh as Dwayne Bravo was caught of the last ball of the over.

The last over , with 1 wicket in hand CSK needed 7 runs. Everyone thought it was over, but then came the one legged Jadhav against Mustafizur Rahman for the last over. First three balls were dots and the pressure was building up. Jadhav couldn’t run. next ball, and scooped for a six! Now it was almost over as CSK needed only 1 run from the last 2 balls, the smile on Dhoni’s face could tell it all! Rohit bought all the fielders inside the 20-yard circle and the ball was bowled and , What a shot from Jadhav , a classic coverdrive and Four! It was game over, The Chennai players ran towards the field in ecstasy for this was a nail-bitting match! CSK had won and courtesy, Dwayne Bravo anf the icing on the cake by Kedar Jadhav!

This was the end of the 1st match of the Vivo IPL 2018, and tht’s the kind of start anyone wanted, regardless of who won, the match was exciting always!
